Responsibilities include administrative oversight of the designated Level 1 trauma center; coordination of all aspects of the operations of the Trauma Services Department which functions in the Acute Surgery Model; direct patient care; teaching surgical residents and medical students from the Mercer University School of Medicine; and leading all aspects of the institution’s participation in the regional organization and delivery of trauma care. The Chief of Trauma & Surgical Critical Care reports directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer. Memorial served approximately 3,000 trauma patients in 2012. It is the home of the M. Gage Ochsner, M.D. Institute for Injury Research and Prevention. Currently, there are nine full-time physicians in the trauma service including general, trauma and orthopaedic trauma surgeons. The Chief of Trauma Services & Surgical Critical Care is responsible to the Chief Medical Officer for coordination of all aspects of the professional practice of trauma services and surgical critical care, including but not limited to coordinating attending physician coverage for all of the section’s patient care activities. Gainesville, FL The University of Florida Surgical Critical Care Residency offers a dynamic 12-month multidisciplinary training program by a team of critical care specialists at the UF Health Shands Hospital. 90 combined beds include the Trauma ICU, the Surgical ICU, the Neuro ICU and the Burn ICU. In collaboration with the surgical services, the critical care teams manage 3,500 critically ill patients across trauma surgery, burn surgery, emergency general surgery, surgical oncology, pancreas-biliary surgery, bariatric surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, vascular surgery, otolaryngology, urology, plastic surgery and transplantation surgery. Primary learning objectives include, but are not limited to advanced airway management, critical care ultrasonography (ex. FAST, TTE, ultrasound guided procedures), bedside procedures such as percutaneous tracheostomy, tube thoracostomy, vascular access, trauma and postoperative resuscitation, as well as sepsis, ARDS, and renal failure management. Surgical critical care residents are required to do 9 months of critical care training, with at least 7 months of which are spent in the two SICUs. Multiple electives are available, including Trauma Surgery, Burn Surgery, CTICU, MICU, PICU, Neonatal ICU, VA SICU/CTICU, Research, Nutrition, Ultrasound/Echocardiography, Airway, Gerontology and Advance Radiology. All call duties are almost exclusively in-house 12 hour shifts. Trauma and critical care call duties are not combined, although there is the ability to take trauma and general surgery call throughout the entire academic year. Surgical critical care residents are expected to actively participate in resident education, as well as protocol implementation and construction. ATLS and ATLS instructor classes are offered at by the Acute Care Surgery Division and the surgical critical care residents are encouraged, but not required, to enroll in these classes. ASSET and ATOM courses are available at UF Health Shands Hospital as well. If desired, a distinct second year of trauma fellowship can be tailored to the specific trainee interests and may include a faculty appointment, robust trauma and emergency surgery clinical experience, research and/or a masters program in public health or medical education. The Division of Acute Care Surgery is submitting their application to the AAST in 2013 for becoming a site that offers an Acute Care Surgery Fellowship. Two positions are available each academic year. Surgical critical care trainees must be board eligible in general surgery, urology, neurosurgery or obstetrics and gynecology. The program is approved by the Residency Review Committee for Surgery through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and participates in the National Resident Matching Program. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be eligible to take the surgical critical care board exam. The University of Florida College of Medicine also offers also critical care medicine fellowship programs in anesthesiology, emergency medicine and pulmonary medicine.
