The Oregon Health & Science University is the only academic quaternary care referral center in the State of Oregon and is one of two level 1 trauma centers in Portland. The critical care fellowship is RRC approved. There are 4 one-year fellowship positions offered per year with the option of pursuing a second year. During the optional second year the fellow functions independently as a junior faculty member with a stipend for taking primary trauma call. The clinical duties are reduced to allow participation in the active trauma research laboratory at OHSU. Fellows interested in acquiring formal training in clinical research have the option of enrolling in the NIH-funded Human Investigations Program with the opportunity to earn a Master’s Degree in Clinical Research. At completion of the program the trainee will have the clinical and research experience required to support an academic career in clinical trauma surgery. Fellowship rotations are designed to provide exposure to a broad range of critically injured and critically ill patients. Fellows spend 4 months rotating on the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care unit where they work primarily with residents in the Department of Surgery and Emergency Medicine. The fellow is responsible for resident education as well as administrative duties and overall management of patient care. While rotating on the Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit fellows take Trauma and Emergency General Surgery night call approximately once per week on Thursday. The fellow is generally given Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday off. Fellows spend a total of 4 months rotating on the General Surgical Intensive Care Unit where they provide critical care for the Emergency General Surgery service as well as the various elective surgical services at OHSU including oncology, hepatobiliary, minimally invasive, colorectal, vascular and bariatric surgery. While rotating on the General Surgical Intensive Care Unit fellows are not expected to take night call. During the remaining 4 months fellows have the opportunity to select electives in critical care units dedicated to pediatrics, medicine, cardiology, burns, neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, anesthesia, and transplant surgery. Additional opportunities are available in radiology and echocardiography. There is also the opportunity to spend a month at outside institutions, if interested. Generally, no night or weekend call is required while rotating on elective services.

(Posted Jul 5, 2016) – The Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care is seeking fellowship trained surgeons with a specialization in critical care and trauma surgery to join our busy Level I Trauma Center, located in Valhalla, 35 minutes north of New York City. Westchester Medical Center is a regional Level I Trauma and Burn Center with more than 40,000 emergency room visits per year. This is a busy academic service and candidates may be expected to provide coverage at other locations within the WMCHealth integrated trauma system. Applicants must be board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care and possess demonstrated skills in emergency surgery, surgical critical care, trauma and/or burn patient care. The successful candidate will have 3-5 years of experience working in a busy Level 1 trauma center, and have a record of teaching as well as research experience (health services, translational or basic science research). We are at the forefront in the development of a regional Telehealth Program and interested candidates will be encouraged to work in and perform research in this area. As the primary teaching hospital of New York Medical College, you will have close interaction with the program’s residents and fellows. The New York Academy of Medicine will again offer an intensive 3 day workshop experience in the use of the GRADE framework for clinical guideline development.  The workshop takes place within the TEACH program which also includes tracks in knowledge translation and the adaptation of clinical policies within health care organizations. TEACH is unique in offering a multidisciplinary learning environment that encompasses domains essential for routine delivery of evidence-based care.  The 3-day conference is centered around small group learning and also features outstanding speakers facilitators on leading issues in evidence-based clinical practice (EBCP) as well as intensive workshop tracks in basic EBCP skills (Level 1), policies and guidelines (Level 2) and system level implementation/knowledge translation (Level 3).  Level 2 includes a group, led by an experienced member of the GRADE Working Group, that focuses on the use of the GRADE system for evidence synthesis for practice guideline development.  TEACH is open to individuals and to multidisciplinary teams from healthcare provider organizations and guideline teams.  All disciplines are welcome including medical staff, nursing, administration, librarians, social workers, care managers, coordinators and health professionals in training.

This position will establish, organize and operate the Clinical Research unit under the direction of the Chief of General Surgery. In addition, the Director of the Department of Surgery Clinical Research Unit will lead in the development of strategic goals for the growth and development of the clinical research program in support of the overall vision and mission of the Department of Surgery of WCM Health; Oversee the research staff including grant writers, research coordinators, research fellows, students and residents involved in research activities of the department; Work collaboratively with individual PIs in surgery in development of clinical studies, and in the development of the budget for the office and oversee the allocation of discretionary resources; Prepare extramural funding applications to federal agencies such as NIH and other federal agencies; Finalizes abstracts, grant and manuscript submissions to include content development; Prepare proposals for funding from independent outside sponsors unaffiliated with grants; Determine effort allocations across funding types for research staff and budget development for grant proposals. The right candidate must hold an MD /PhD or Master’s Degree and have more than 5 years of clinical research experience with a proven record in leading clinical studies, publications, grant writing and extramural funding. You will be expected to lead, design and conduct clinical research studies, both prospective and retrospective in a number of surgical disciplines and work closely and to communicate effectively with other members of the research team in order to prepare publications and grant applications for further funding.

Ours is the ONLY Level I Trauma Center between Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Akron. There are three Level III centers in the surrounding communities.The opportunity is to join a group of 4 Trauma/Critical Care trained surgeons with support provided by Advanced Practice Providers. We also have an accredited general surgery residency program. In-house calls average 5-6 per month. This position offers an opportunity for an elective general surgery practice. Successful applicants will be appointed at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Clinical Scholar Pathway, commensurate with years of experience and accomplishments. Applicants must be board certified in General Surgery or board eligible with plans for certification with additional fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care. He or she must be eligible for licensure in the State of Vermont, and eligible to work in the United States. In addition to a strong clinical background in all aspects of Acute Care Surgery (trauma, emergency general surgery and surgical critical care), the candidate should have a demonstrable interest in pursuing research, teaching, and/or administrative activities of an academic division of Acute Care Surgery. This is a full-time, 12-month, salaried position with attending staff privileges at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
