(Posted Feb 9, 2017) – University of Wisconsin – Madison Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is recruiting a Trauma and Acute Care Surgeon to support the growth and development of an expanding surgical critical care program. UW Hospital is one of just 13 hospitals nationwide, and the only one in the state, to be verified and accredited by the ACS as a Level One Trauma Center. The trauma service currently comprises 10 faculty members offering a full array of complex trauma, surgical critical care, burn, and acute care surgery services. The service line is vibrant and growing and is backed by a strong institutional commitment to further develop surgical services. We are seeking outstanding candidates who have a demonstrated research track record. Candidates will be expected to participate in clinical trials, outcomes research and quality research. Candidates for this tenure-track position will be expected to establish research programs with the potential for extramural funding. The incumbent will meet the clinical needs of an active trauma, burn, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care program at University Hospital, The American Center, Unity Point Meriter Hospital, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and the SwedishAmerican Hospital System. All faculty in the Department of Surgery are expected to contribute to the academic pursuits of the department through publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals and/or presenting at regional and national conferences. Candidates should be board certified in General Surgery and have completed an accredited fellowship in Surgical Critical Care. The incumbent will also participate in the teaching of general surgery residents and fellows, other residents, interns, medical students, and other allied health professionals. Rank will depend on the candidate’s interests and credentials. (Posted Feb 14, 2017) – DIVISION CHIEF – TRAUMA, SURGICAL CRITICAL CARE AND ACUTE CARE SURGERY The Department of Surgery at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey seeks an outstanding academic surgeon to lead the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. The successful candidate will hold a faculty appointment at the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and lead a highly accomplished Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. The successful candidate will also be appointed to hold the endowed Wesley J. Howe Professor of Trauma Surgery and be the Director of the New Jersey Trauma Center at University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey. Integral to the position, will be the ability to foster cutting edge research, lead academically and educationally oriented faculty, and demonstrate the skills to propel the Division to new heights in its clinical, research and teaching missions. Reporting to the Chair of Surgery, the Division Chief will have the goal of advancing the field of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery through patient care, practice innovation, research, and education. The Division Chief will be charged with providing leadership of a diverse and talented faculty at a Level 1 academic Trauma Center, for the development of clinical, outcomes and health services research. The ability to work collaboratively within the Department as well as across departments and schools to develop clinical and research initiatives are considered top priorities for the Division. Mosenthal, Ben Rush Endowed Professor and Chair. The department’s training programs include general surgery, plastics surgery, urology surgery residencies, as well as vascular and surgical critical care fellowships. Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery: The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery includes nine faculty members who are responsible for covering Trauma Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Acute Care Surgery. The Division provides surgical services for the benefit of our patients and professional colleagues twenty-four hours each day, seven days a week. Our state designated Level 1 Trauma Center has been continually verified by the American College of Surgeons since 1991. While the major academic focus is trauma and critical care, we also provide all emergency surgical coverage to the emergency department at University Hospital. All division faculty have their general surgery boards with added qualifications in critical care from the American Board of Surgery. In addition, the Division includes a physiatrist who is board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well a Brain Injury Medicine. Research activities focus heavily on measuring patient outcomes after injury, cost-effective medical care, palliative care, surgical infections, critical care and surgical education. The robust educational program includes daily morning report conference, weekly trauma-case conferences, and various outreach conferences to hospitals and public forums. There is an active and vibrant trauma outreach and prevention program staffed by an experienced coordinator. Trauma Surgery: Components of the trauma surgery program include the Trauma Admitting Area, OR, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, inpatient units as well as the outpatient clinic. The trauma program is recognized as an integral and nationally known health care delivery service of University Hospital. The Division Chief is a member of the hospital’s joint Operative Committee and has a reporting structure to the highest level of hospital administration. This multidisciplinary program crosses many specialty lines dedicated to the care of the injured within the hospital's community. We remain the only Level 1 Trauma Center for northern New Jersey and one of the three Level I centers in the state. Our trauma service is staffed 24/7 by faculty members of the Division and the Division Chief will assume the role of Trauma Medical Director. The service is also supported by six advanced practice providers. The trauma service responds to over 3,000 trauma activations per year and over 2,000 hospital admissions with approximately 25% penetrating trauma. The patient population served is ethnically and demographically diverse. There is in-house attending coverage at all times. This plan ensures that any injured patient requiring immediate surgical treatment will have access to the highest level of professional care we can offer. Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU): The Division provides service coverage in The University Hospital’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The SICU is a closed unit that provides critical care trauma, general surgery and surgical subspecialists at UH including the liver transplant team. High level care is delivered in a multidisciplinary fashion maintaining a close working relationship with Critical Care Pharmacy as well as other ancillary services. There is in-house resident and faculty coverage of the SICU at all times. The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship is a one year ACGME accredited fellowship that has been in existence since 1984. The fellows also have a large role in the trauma program and, in addition to the SICU and Trauma Service, offers a number of rotations such as burns (at St. Barnabas, an ABA approved burn center in Livingston, NJ), and includes one month of research. A new exchange rotation with the ACGME approved critical care Fellowship at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is planned for the 2017 academic year. The Surgical Critical Care Fellow is required to have completed an ACGME accredited program in general surgery. The SICU is a 14-bed unit that admits all surgical cases. The SICU service is responsible for the patient’s care while in the SICU. There are approximately 650 SICU patients admitted annually. The SICU is currently directed by the SICU Medical Director, Dr. Leslie Tyrie who is also the fellowship director. Acute Care Surgery (ACS): Emergency general surgery coverage, including emergency department and in-hospital consultations, is provided 24/7 by the members of the Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery. The ACS service is further supported by advanced practice providers and residents. Quality improvement and standardization of care is a priority for this service. This 633-bed hospital is located in Marietta, GA, approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta, GA. The surgeon will provide clinical care of trauma patients and those with critical surgical conditions, and will support the Trauma Program as needed through administrative support, teaching, additional clinical work, community outreach, and other work as necessary. The candidate must be Board Certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery with plans to recertify when necessary. The candidate must have completed an accredited Fellowship in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, have a certificate or be able to obtain a certificate in Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care within two years, and plans to recertify when necessary. This individual will also hold the prestigious John C. McDonald Endowed Chair in Surgery. Under the leadership of Dr. G.E. Ghali, DDS, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), the Chair will build on an excellent foundation of 27 full- and part-time faculty and staff and work collaboratively with other departments. Our health sciences center is home to the School of Medicine, School of Graduate Studies, and School of Allied Health Professions. More than 800 students are enrolled in the degree programs at any one time. Additionally, nearly 600 residents and fellows are trained each year. The primary objectives of the Department of Surgery are high quality care; progressive resident development in clinical, operative and research skills; and an environment which challenges students, residents, and faculty alike, while providing maximum opportunity for development. The successful candidate must have proven experience as a leader who can inspire faculty and staff to work together to develop future leaders in the specialty. It is also important that the candidate possess strong management skills with an ability to grow revenues and meet budgets. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a broad range of constituents, both internally and externally, are vital. In addition, the chairman will oversee, coordinate, and encourage research within the department. Candidates must have a distinguished record in Surgery, outstanding surgical skills and commensurate clinical activities. Candidates must have a firm commitment to the education of residents and medical students, and qualify for the rank of Professor of Surgery. Eligibility for a Louisiana Medical License is required.
