(Posted Mar 17, 2017) – The Division of Acute Care Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University is seeking hire Acute Care Surgeons with interest in trauma, emrgency and elective general surgery, and surgical critical care to join a collegial team of 14 trauma surgeons. Candidates should have completed training in general surgery and surgical critical care, and be board eligible/certified in both. Applicants should have an interest in academic medicine, clinical research and surgical education. Candidates will provide care at Thomas Jefferson University's Hospital's Level 1 trauma Center, and at one of our level II trauma centers at The Lankenau Medical Center (a university affiliated hospital with an independent surgical residency) and/or Paoli Hospital (a community high volume level two center). The Level 1 center at Jefferson is mostly a tertiary referral center for complex trauma cases (65% trauma referrals) and is 80% blunt trauma. The opportunities for both elective and emergency general surgery are expansive. Additionally we run a 17-bed SICU. Our practice has a significant academic component which includes an ACGME-approved Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, ongoing clinical research as well as daily teaching of surgical residents, fellows, and medical students. Level 2 centers are almost exclusively primary scene referral centers with mostly blunt (75%) trauma. The acute care surgery division is in the classic model, we are one of the nation's first Acute Care Surgery divisions. The elective and emergency surgery opportunities are extensive, unlimited and vibrant. Located in southeastern Pennsylvania, Philadelphia is a cultural and historical hub. Philadelphia is an eminently liveable metropolis. It offers every possible amenity. Academic appointment commensurate with experience is granted at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University.

Hosted by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this conference is designed to disseminate, refine, and implement the recommendations proposed by the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine’s (NASEM) landmark report, A National Trauma System: Integrating Military and Civilian Trauma Systems to Achieve Zero Preventable Deaths after Injury. This meeting will bring together multidisciplinary professionals across the full spectrum of the trauma care system with the goal of building a National Trauma Action Plan designed to achieve zero preventable injury deaths. The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship offered by Michigan State University and Spectrum Health Butterworth is a one- year ACGME accredited program. The fellowship aims to train individuals in a broad range of disciplines essential to care of the critically ill and injured patient, with two fellowship positions per year. Spectrum Health Butterworth is an ACS verified Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving a population of over 1.5 million in West Michigan. Butterworth Hospital is the 21st largest hospital in the United States with over 120,000 ER visits and 25,000 inpatient surgeries each year. The hospital and trauma center are supported by an extensive EMS system and Airomed flight program. As a tertiary and quaternary referral center, fellows will be exposed to a wide array of clinical care, innovation, and research initiatives. The 22 bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit serves as the main site of clinical rotations. Fellows will be exposed to an extensive variety of patients including General Surgery, Trauma and Severe Traumatic Brain Injuries, Burn, Surgical Oncology, Vascular Surgery, ENT and Thoracic patients. Rotations in the Cardiac ICU, including ECMO and transplant, and Neuro ICU are also included. Electives in Advanced Airway Management, Surgical Nutrition, Echocardiography, Emergency General Surgery, and Research and Administration are available to enhance the experience. Operative opportunities, within the confines of ACGME regulations, also exist for those that are interested. Fellows will work with members of the Division of Acute Care Surgery at Spectrum Health, including 12 board certified surgical intensivists with diverse clinical backgrounds. The SCC fellow will work with and lead the multidisciplinary surgical critical care team consisting of, and overseeing, residents and medical students. The practice is also supported by Advanced Practice Providers. Education occurs in the form of formal lectures and didactics, journal club, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, Radiology-Surgery multidisciplinary conference and a significant amount of daily teaching by a dedicated faculty. Opportunities for research and administrative duties including committee memberships are highly encouraged. Fellows complete at least one project per year which is tailored to their individual interests and career goals.

The Department of Surgery, Los Angeles County-Harbor-UCLA seeks one fellow in Surgical Critical Care to commence July 1st, 2017. Qualified applicants should have completed a residency in general surgery by this date. We will consider an applicant who has completed three years in general surgery if it is anticipated that the individual will return to the core program and graduate. This one year fellowship in SCC is an ACGME accredited program in the Department of Surgery and is administered by the Division of Trauma/ Acute Care Surgery/ Surgical Critical Care. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the American Board of Surgery certification examination for added qualification in SCC. Harbor-UCLA is a robust ACS level I trauma center; one of only four in the Los Angeles County system. There are required rotations in the Harbor-UCLA adult Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), the Harbor-UCLA Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), the Los Angeles County- University of Southern California (LAC + USC) Burn Center and the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). There are also rotations dedicated to research and an elective rotation (one month each).

Description of professional services and duties are as follows: CLINICAL • Oversees, coordinates and provides input on the development and maintenance of practice guidelines, policies and methodologies for trauma services at Beaumont - Dearborn. • Oversees, coordinates and provides input to improve compliance with ACS requirements regarding verification, clinical involvement, education and regional or national commitments. • Ensures appropriate clinical and administrative coverage for the Beaumont-Dearborn Trauma Program. • Participates as a core Trauma Surgeon at Beaumont-Dearborn and utilizes the Trauma Program to audit care of the injured throughout Beaumont Health. • Participates in all relevant trauma quality assurance and peer review activities as required. • Supervises patient focused multi-disciplinary rounds on a regular basis. TEACHING • Participates in the education/training of hospital personnel, trauma surgeons and residency programs. • Maintains membership and active participation in regional and national trauma organizations. • Participates in monthly Trauma Grand Rounds with CME for all trauma team members and hospital personnel. • Is an ATLS instructor, and works to provide internal ATLS courses for the trauma staff once every two years. • Works with the OHS IRB to oversee trauma related research. Organizes and participates in System Trauma Program research. MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS • Board Certified in General Surgery with Added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. • ATLS Instructor. • Demonstrated advanced competency in surgical critical care/trauma surgery. This unique leadership position will require the candidate to be collaborative and forward thinking in establishing The Ohio State University East Hospital as a Level III Trauma Center. This is a full time faculty appointment with academic rank determined by level of experience and prior productivity. This faculty member will have an important presence in the Division of Trauma, Critical and Burn at both The Ohio State University East Hospital and the Wexner Medical Center’s acute care surgery program, including its Level I Trauma Center.
