With the Trauma Medical Director, ensures essential criteria are met for American College of Surgeons verification process for Level I Truma Centers in accordance with the expectations outlined in the current Resources for Optional Care of the Injured Patient Over sees 4-5 direct reports in the performance of: data management, injury prevention, and research related to the Trauma Center Participates in daily rounds and trauma activations Develops policies and procedures based on the current literature, input from clinicians, and findings from the Performance Improvement and Patient Safety Program (PIPS) Manages and coordinates the systems of Trauma Performance Improvement Program Assumes day to day responsibility for PIPS activities as they relate to all aspects of care delivery Works closely with all members of theTrauma and Acute Care Surgery clinical team to identify complications, and adverse advents Serves as the coordinator for the identification, investigation, reporting and follow up of incidents and quality issues Receives, assesses and forwards opportunities for improvement to appropriate areas using established structures within Maine Medical Center and Maine Medical Partners Coordinates all Trauma related meetings including: Weekly Performance Improvement, Multidisciplinary Care Review Committee, and Trauma Operational Process Improvement Committee Supervises the collection of registry data, coding and scoring Develops processes for validation Ensures that the registry data facilitates performance improvement and prevention activities Leads cross departmental initiatives across: Emergency Dept., multiple surgical specialties, Rehab Medicine, Operating Room, Intesive Care Unit, Surgical Clinic, Care Management, and multiple Nursing Units Displays cooperative behavior Interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment Demonstrates skill in team building and positive problem resolution Manages the Trauma Administration budget and expenses including conducting budget variance analysis and the creation of annual budget targets Facilitates integration of the assigned program and activities with other related initiatives Serves as the administrative liaison of the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Program to hospital administration and to the complex network of disciplines that work in the provision of care Works closely with Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Anesthesia and ED liaisons Forwards all relevant cases for review by liaisons Ensures appropriate communication about program within and outside of the MaineHealth system Promotes awareness of trauma activities using a variety of media Identifies opportunities for injury prevention programs in the local community and participates in program implementation Participates and/or coordinates clinical trauma education (TNCC, ATOM, ATLS, FCCS and RTTDC) activities, as well as outreach activities May serve on various standing and other committees Regularly meets with nursing representatives to the Trauma Service and attends Emergency Medicine Department Trauma Committee meetings Represents the Trauma Service on the Trauma Nurse Education Committee with the goal of providing an appropriate number of education courses per year to MMC nurses participating in trauma care Represents the Trauma Service in a variety of local, state and regional forums Maintains membership in Maine's LifeFlight of Maine QI Committee, State Trauma Advisory Council, and New England Regional Level I Trauma Committee MMC Manager Leadership Competencies Leading Change in a Complex Environment - Communicates a compelling and inspired vision or sense of core purpose - Initiates and inspires the organization/unit to accomplish goals - Encourages teamwork and works collaboratively across the organization - Coaches staff through changes - Models and encourages risk-taking and innovation Demonstrating Integrity and Trust - Communicates directly, truthfully, and respectfully with all staff and customers - Acts as a positive role model; Position Overview Southcoast Health is seeking a dynamic trauma surgeon with an interest in surgical critical care to join its employed multispecialty physicians practice as the Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in the Department of General Surgery. The successful candidate will manage the acute care surgery program and provide clinical leadership as Southcoast works towards Trauma certification. He or she will help recruit two additional acute care surgeons and work with existing medical intensivists to create a comprehensive critical care model. The surgeon will be clinically supported by a group of more than 450 FTE and enjoy strong support from administrative and clinical physician leadership team members. The surgeon will have dedicated and protected block time as a well-appointed office staff including a dedicated and experienced Advanced Practice Provider to assist with hospital rounding. Qualifications • An MD/DO degree with board certification in Surgery with additional fellowship in Trauma or Acute Care, and ability to obtain an unrestricted Massachusetts medical license. • Strong leadership skills with the ability to advance and develop a superior clinical service. • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in group settings or one-on-one. • Expertise in establishing physician relationships combined with the ability to manage an interdisciplinary team while appreciating and fostering collegial and peer participation from all disciplines.

2017 EAST Board Supports National Trauma Survivors Day

On Wednesday, May 17th the nation’s healthcare community will celebrate National Trauma Survivors Day (NTSD).  This celebration seeks to draw inspiration from and provide support to survivors of traumatic injuries and their caregivers, opening the road to their recovery from trauma. During this event, we encourage all those who support these patients to write them a note of inspiration to aid in the recovery process and to share this note via social media thereby creating one strong voice for recovery from injury. 

Simply posting a message of hope and support by every one of us will create an unprecedented voice of compassion and solidarity from the trauma community on behalf of our patients and their families.

Grand Strand Regional Medical Center is one of two Level II trauma centers in South Carolina and the only Level II trauma program in SC certified by the American College of Surgeons and DHEC. Trauma surgeons treated 3,400 patients in 2016, identified as those who suffer life-threatening injuries with potential for secondary complications such as shock, respiratory failure or death. There are three dedicated trauma rooms with helipad adjacent to the emergency department. We have five trauma surgeons, a trauma orthopedic surgeon, anesthesiologists, emergency department physicians and onsite laboratory. All critical care and emergency nurses have special training in trauma nursing and advanced cardiac and pediatric life support. Established practice currently consists of Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Trauma, General Surgery Trauma, Breast Surgery and General Surgery. Call requirements: minimum of 6 primary call shifts per month with an equitable share of back-up call. Competitive compensation package consisting of a guaranteed base salary + WRVU incentive, comprehensive benefits package, paid occurrence based malpractice, PTO, CME, 401K, as well as several other negotiable incentives.

(Posted May 17, 2017) – Title: Faculty Physician – Trauma Surgery Reports to: Medical Director and Section Chief of Trauma General Surgery, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care Dignity Health Medical Group in partnership with Chandler Regional Medical Center (CRMC), an ACS-verified Level I trauma center in suburban Phoenix, is seeking a highly qualified, fellowship-trained acute care surgeon to join our team of five (5). Our team’s focus is driven around being leaders in education, centered on evidenced based medicine while ensuring consistent collaboration and communications within the team. Ideal candidates must be easy-going, approachable and focused around team based medicine. They also need to be comfortable in a rapid growing and expanding environment while also being board-certified or board-eligible by the America Board of Surgery in general surgery with added qualifications in surgical critical care, as well as expertise in the management of complex injuries including thoracic and vascular trauma. In addition, candidates must have an interest and proven track record in clinical and/or basic science research with documented publications. CRM evaluated 80,000 patients in the emergency department and 3,400 trauma patients last year, of which 11% suffered a penetrating mechanism. Our trauma center in on track to care for 3,600 patients this year. We are formally integrated with the William Beaumont Army Medical Center (WBAMC) General Surgery Residency in El Paso, TX. In addition to general surgery resident coverage, we also have general surgery research residents year round as well as rotating family medicine residents and 24/7 ACNP and PA coverage. We have excellent subspecialty support, including Barrow Neurological Institute neurosurgeons and fellowship-trained orthopedic trauma surgeons. Duties include equitable primary and back-up trauma and emergency general surgery call. Candidates would provide coverage of our 12-bed and 5-bed dedicated trauma intensive care units, floor rounds, clinic and an elective surgery practice (including robotics). We have a robust trauma research program and expect each member of the team to fully engage in ongoing research activities within the division. Please join us for the 2017 Creighton Trauma Symposium!   Our very special guest this year is Richard Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS.   Dr. Carmona, a retired Vice Admiral in the United States Navy, served as the 17th Surgeon General of the United States and Currently is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Arizona.   He will give the Keynote Address – Prevention, Preparedness, Plagues, and Politics: The Life of the Surgeon General.

Other speakers include such internationally renowned surgeons: Jose J. Diaz, MD, CNS, FACS, FCCM, Juan C. Duchesne, MD, FACS, FCCP, FCCM, Eric A. Elster, MD, FACS, CAPT, MC, USN, Ernest E.
