Responsibilities will include patient care on the Trauma Service and in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, research, and teaching. (Posted May 23, 2018) – POSITION SUMMARY: Under direction of the Trauma Medical Director or his designee, oversees certain aspects of the Trauma Program including but not limited to; clinical, critical care, education, performance improvement, pre-hospital, and Trauma Registry activities. These responsibilities, in coordination with the Trauma Program Medical Director shall be managed consistent with Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation standards and with those policies promulgated by Lancaster General Hospital and the Department of Surgery. Consults with the Trauma Program Medical Director (TPMD), as appropriate, in carrying out duties and responsibilities including setting of priorities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties: • Patient Care, Policies, Procedures, and Admission Criteria: Facilitates, in conjunction with the TPMD, the utilization of patient care and admission criteria policies and procedures for the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Program. Implements and assures compliance with all approved policies and procedures. Participates in the development of protocols and management guidelines necessary for the care of the trauma patient. - Patient Care Management: In conjunction with the TPMD manages the medical and surgical care of trauma patients and intervenes on active cases where there are variances from the standard of care. Surgical assistant to the TPMD for elective trauma cases. - Performance Improvement Activities: In conjunction with the TPMD is accountable for trauma related Quality and Performance Improvement activities such as: *Evaluation of patient care and outcome data to provide direction and oversight at trauma service performance improvement meetings. *Participation in Trauma Mortality and Morbidity (M & M) conference. *Evaluation of Trauma Registry data appropriate to their provider outcomes and program outcomes *Utilizes reviewed data and meeting results to improve the system of care. • Continuing Medical Education: Participates in nationally recognized trauma forums and professional committees, which would enhance skills and abilities as trauma and critical care surgeon. Participates in trauma related educational programs (internal and external) for Health Professionals and the community. Participates as an ATLS Instructor. • Physician Coverage: Provides coverage as defined by a mutually agreed upon schedule coordinated by the TPMD or delegate Participates as a member in the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Service on-call roster. SECONDARY FUNCTIONS: The following duties are considered secondary to the primary duties listed above: • Planning and Program Development: In conjunction with the TPMD and the Associate TPMD, identifies and recommends objectives for the Trauma Program consistent with Lancaster General Hospital goals. • Represents: the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Program at National, State, and Regional professional meetings. • Other duties as assigned. JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: • M.D., or DO Fellowship trained in Trauma. • Fellowship trained in critical care • Unrestricted license to practice medicine in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania. • Board Certification in medical specialties of general surgery and surgical critical care within two (2) years of assuming position • Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor certification within two (2) years of assuming position • High level of interpersonal skills to allow effective communications with a wide variety of hospital personnel and physicians and the general public. • Significant hospital-based surgery experience. • A health care provider in good standing with Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal and state health insurance programs, i.e. not excluded from participation in Medicare, Medicaid or any other federal or state health insurance program. • Documented interest and experience in trauma education and research.

(Posted May 25, 2018) – The Department of Surgery at The University of North Carolina is seeking applications for a full-time academic trauma, critical care, and acute care surgeon to join our Division of General and Acute Care Surgery as the Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. The Division of General and Acute Care Surgery is among 9 clinical Divisions in the Department of Surgery. The Division currently includes 8 faculty members that provide a broad array of clinical services while caring for injured and critically ill patients as well as emergency general surgery patients. Academic appointment will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience. The ideal applicant will have an interest in trauma, critical care, and acute care surgery. Experience with ECMO is desirable, but not required. Applicants with research experience in clinical outcomes, quality and safety, health services research, and basic and translational research are strongly encouraged to apply. Our current Surgical ICU is a 16 bed unit that houses trauma, emergency general surgery, and elective surgical patients from the Department of Surgery and many surgical subspecialties. This ICU will be expanded to 28 beds in late 2021 with the construction of our new OR Tower. The Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit is a member of the ICU Advisory Committee, and works frequently with the Directors of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic ICU (CVT ICU), the Neurocritical Care Unit, the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, the Burn Intensive Care Unit, and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Adult ECMO patients are cared for both in the SICU and the CVT ICU. The Department of Surgery also has a one-year Surgical Critical Care fellowship with two fellows each year. Faculty members within the Division of General and Acute Care Surgery must possess a desire to commit to all three mission of the department and school of medicine, including the clinical, education, and research missions. Regarding the education mission, faculty members are expected to regularly participate in the education of medical students, residents, and fellows in our Surgical Critical Care fellowship. Additionally, Acute Care faculty participate in outreach to our many rural referring hospitals and to EMS providers from rural North Carolina counties. Regarding the research mission, a commitment to any one of a broad array of research interests is desirable, including but not limited to clinical, outcomes, health services, basic science, translational, ethics, education, or global surgery research. Regarding the clinical mission, faculty members must be committed to delivering high quality clinical care that is of value to the patients of UNC. Selected candidate must be team-oriented and have the ability to interact well with colleagues inside and out of the Division. Outreach to our many rural referring hospitals is highly encouraged. As a 350-bed facility with 15,000 inpatient admissions, 12,000 surgeries, and nearly 50,000 emergency department visits annually, Forbes provides an advanced level of care to our patients. Position Overview Two trauma/critical care surgeons staff the day shift M-F, 7 AM-7 PM. During holidays, weekends and night shifts there is one surgeon in house with a second surgeon at home on backup call. All surgeons are currently required to cover at least five in house night shifts per month as well as cover an equal share of night back-up call. The trauma surgeons provide critical care for trauma and surgical patients in the new 20-bed Intensive Care Unit. The Trauma Service support staff includes 6 advanced practice providers. One is present 24/7 and two during Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday daytime. Forbes is a teaching hospital and has residents present at all times, including general surgery residents. There is at least one surgery resident in house 24/7. The residents respond to highest-level trauma activations unless they are in the operating room. The qualified candidate should be board certified in Surgery and Surgical Critical Care. Board-eligible graduates of critical care fellowships with excellent interpersonal communication skills, experience delivering healthcare via collaborative teamwork and a professional goal to practice in one location for at least five years will also be considered. The ability to obtain and maintain a Pennsylvania Medical License and privileges with AHN are required.
