(Posted Jun 12, 2018) – The Department of Surgery, Section of General Surgery is seeking candidates for a position in the Division of Acute Care Surgery with an established interest in basic, translational or health services research. Applicants must be board certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care. Requirements include demonstrated skills in emergency surgery, surgical critical care, trauma, an academic interest, and a record of teaching and research experience. We are particularly interested in candidates with an established track record of academic productivity in basic or health services research. The Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan, founded in 1850, is nationally recognized for excellence in patient care, education and research. Currently we are ranked number one in the country for NIH funding. The unifying goal of the Department of Surgery is to create the next generation of academic surgical leaders. The hospital is an American College of Surgeons-verified Level 1 (adult and pediatric) Trauma Center, and also the state's only American Burn Association-verified Burn Center for adult and pediatric burns. The Division of Acute Care Surgery manages trauma and burn patients, and also provides comprehensive emergency general surgery and critical care services. The Division’s 12 faculty members provide care to nearly 5,000 patients, and perform over 1,600 operations per year. They also direct the Surgical Intensive Care Unit as well as the Trauma-Burn Intensive Care Unit. The Division has major academic resources with a combined research portfolio of over $30 million over the past five years. We perform high-volume emergency general surgery at our 385 bed hospital in Annapolis, Maryland, the third busiest surgical hospital in the state. ICU time may also be available for interested and qualified candidates. Applicants should have a strong clinical background with interest in teaching residents and other learners. Additional focus on clinical research and quality/outcome improvement is preferred. Acute Care surgery provides 24 hr coverage to the hospital with regular resident coverage. (Posted Jul 5, 2018) – We are currently accepting applications for a one-year acute care surgery fellowship at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. The fellowship provides the opportunity to work at our Level I Trauma Center that serves the greater central Ohio region as well as our new Level III Trauma Center. The curriculum focuses on a broad spectrum of acute surgical disease with particular emphasis on complex surgical emergencies, surgical rescue, and multidisciplinary surgical care. Elective rotations are available in burn surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, orthopaedic surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, and interventional radiology. In addition, opportunities to engage in a variety of research are available and range from surgical innovations to health outcomes research and clinical trials. Our 1,382-bed Level I Trauma Center resides on the main academic campus and sees approximately 2,800 trauma patients annually. The trauma service operates in tandem with the emergency general surgery service forming two distinct acute care surgery services that typically carry a combined census of 60 patients. Our program strengths stem from our large volume of high acuity surgical cases as well as our commitment to excellence in clinical teaching. The acute care surgery service is led by 10 full-time faculty surgeons who maintain regional and national standings in academic surgery and critical care. The Division of Trauma, Critical Care and Burn concentrates efforts in clinical care, research, and education related to patients with acute care problems. The division delivers high-quality care to patients suffering from surgical critical illness, trauma, emergency general surgery diseases, and burns. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center on the main campus is established as a Level I Trauma Center seeing approximately 2,800 trauma patients annually. The NYAM GRADE workshop will be led by Dr. Eddy Lang MD with the assistance of Dr. John J Riva DC MSc. Dr. Lang is the Academic and Clinical Department Head for Emergency Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, Alberta,  CA.  He is an experienced member of the GRADE Working Group and has taught the GRADE system to health professionals throughout the Western Hemisphere.  Dr. Riva is Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at McMaster University, Ontario, Canada.  He is a member of the GRADE working group and an associate member of Cochrane Canada.  He has contributed to clinical guideline groups using GRADE for the World Health Organization (WHO), World Allergy Organization (WAO), Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health, American Society of Hematology (ASH).

(Posted Jul 20, 2018) – The Massachusetts General Hospital’s Division of Community Surgery (DCS) and the Division of Trauma, Emergency Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care (TESSCC) are seeking an Acute Care Surgeon for the North Shore Medical Center in Salem, Massachusetts and for the Massachusetts General Hospital. The surgeon will have a joint appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the North Shore Medical Center and an academic appointment at Harvard Medical School. Reporting to the Chiefs of the MGH Divisions of Community Surgery and TESSCC, the successful candidate will be responsible for clinical care and teaching at North Shore Medical Center and Mass General Hospital, as they relate to Acute Care Surgery. The academic appointment will be commensurate with experience and credentials. Applicants must be board-certificated in General Surgery with added qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. Fellowship training in Acute Care Surgery is preferred but is not mandatory. The MGH is a 1,020-bed facility in Boston, MA and an ACS-verified Level I Adult Trauma Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center and ABA-verified Burn Center. North Shore Medical Center is a 395-bed Level III Trauma Center in Salem, Mass.
