The successful applicant will be encouraged to participate in the clinical areas of trauma, surgical critical care and emergency general surgery. Opportunities may be available for a limited elective general surgery practice. Saint Luke’s Hospital is a major teaching affiliate hospital for the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. Opportunities exist for a clinical academic appointment within the Department of Surgery. There will also be responsibility for teaching general surgery residents at this State designated Level I trauma center as well as instruction of medical students on their surgery and ICU rotations. Involvement in clinical research is encouraged and preferred. The candidate must be board certified/eligible by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and be certified/eligible for added Qualifications in Surgical Critical Care. This position requires the applicant to obtain a Missouri medical license. Our Section of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery consists of nine full-time faculty members with more than 60 years of teaching experience in this specialty. The clinical time on surgical critical care may be supplemented with an additional year of academic development and acute care surgery: working with our faculty to better prepare for a career in academic surgery. Our faculty has copious experience in basic and clinical sciences and, in particular, in Health Services Research. This supplemental experience may culminate in a Masters in Science or Certificate degree through the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as per candidate needs. The ideal candidate will have completed a general surgery, emergency medicine, gynecology, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery or anesthesia fellowship at an ACGME-accredited program. They must possess the ability to work hard, dedicate time to optimizing the care of patients, and think outside of the box. This program stresses the fellow’s increased independence as a surgical critical care surgeon. Under the supervision of our seven-surgeon Trauma and Acute Care Surgery team, the fellow will gain competency in Burn Care; Cardiovascular Physiology, Pathophysiology and Therapy; Endocrine Disorders; Ethics and Palliative Care; Gastrointestinal Disorders; Hematologic Disorders; Infections Diseases; Monitoring and Bioengineering; Neurology; Nutrition; Obstetrical Disorders; Pediatrics; Pharmacology; Renal Failure; Respiratory Disorders; Statistics, Transplantation; Trauma; and Ultrasound Imaging. The fellow will receive assessment and evaluation in these six competencies: •Interpersonal & Communication Skills •Medical Knowledge •Patient Care •Practice-based Learning & Improvement •Professionalism •Systems-based Practices The fellow will also benefit from a collaborative teaching environment. The San Diego Day of Trauma is a nationally accredited continuing medical education conference designed for physicians, nurses, physician assistants and first responders in the fields of trauma, emergency, and critical care medicine. Nationally renowned speakers will present state of the art management of life threatening emergencies commonly encountered in the field. Conference speakers will include specialists in the fields of pre-hospital care, trauma surgery, and critical care.
